The additional fee will be added per passenger from April 1, to fund
what Ryanair calls "unfair and discriminatory elements of the airline
EU261 regulations"

Full Story.

GOOD!

This is exactly what should have happened in the first place.

2 Euro per person for the security of the Euro legislation is a small price
to pay to avoid being the one getting shafted with the 500 Euro bill because
Ryanair (or to be fair, any one of 100 airlines) pisses you about.

FWIW 2 Euro pp is about the sum that I calculated (and stated on usenet)
this would cost the airlines when they were whinging about how expensive it
was going to be for them.

But would this premium guarantee that pax would receive recompense
when things go wrong.?

If not an April Fool joke, I find this appalling.
Yet maybe believable in the current economic downpour.

They will charge you extra to put enough cash in their bank account to
cover *their* costs when *they* screw you up?

'Heads we win, tails you lose.'

Wonderful. When can I get to do things like that?

But it's not for when THEY screw up.

It's for when an Icelandic volcano means that they can't fly
