Eurocrats are considering a “one flight, one price” proposal after
complaints from travellers and watchdogs about “add-on” charges that
can more than double price of flight.

European Commission vice-president and transport supremo Siim Kallas
could stamp out sneaky extras.

Talking of hidden charges a neighbour of mine looked at Jet2's 'budget
flight' GLA-EWR.. he was shocked to find that
the add-ons to the flight price alone tp some £545. He found cheaper
hotel-flight fdealslying direct from Edinburgh Airport
and not just for one selective period either.

How much of the add-ons were tax/fees (which would be about £300 for a
trip like that)

Jet2's qouted online fare - without add-ons - inclusive of all taxes
and fees were £398.98
Add-ons were for bags, meals, seat selection, and IFE (Something
regular service airlines
include in the fare)

Bags are getting costly these days. I've just booked some tickets for
someone to fly transatlantic and they are only allowed one bag free (on
a full fare airline). They'd have been charged $25 for the first bag if
flying inside the USA. A second bag transatlantic (was free until
recently) is $50.

You do at least get one bag each pax free... long may it continue..

Replying to yourself again man.
And failing to keep it EDI. I'm sure Jet2 has just as many 'sneaky
add-ons' regardless of which airport they are flying from.

If you paid attention you would discover this is topical in more than
one usenet
newsgroup..

Yes Jet2 do - along with other locos - have sneaky add-ons
irrespective of which airport they fly from.

Whilst one or two airlines have pushed the boundaries on this rather too far
[1], I can't see how a blanket ban is going to work.

Say an airline can't charge extra for anything, does this mean that airlines
aren't going to be allowed to charge for the carriage of: multiple bags,
overweight bags, a bicycle? Things that they have historically always
charged extra for.

And stopping airlines from charging extra for seat selection or "speedy"
boarding isn't going to see these features included in the headline price
for free. They are just going to be discontinued options and airlines are
going to lose genuine optional income which will push up fares for everyone.

[1] I really can't understand why someone who thinks that they are going to
get a flight for "10 pounds" would click the buy button when it ends up
costing 120, if they haven't already established that 120 is the "best"
price. So I've never understood why the airline try so hard to reduce the
headline price in this way.

There are a lot of 'thick' people out there just waiting to be
exploited.
